Fall Recreation

Come autumn, our mountains light up

Discover the special season

Around here, autumn is not merely the season in between summer and winter. It’s a special time unto itself.

In early fall the days still reach to the 80s. By October, cooling temperatures set off fabulous displays of gold in the birch and cottonwood groves, with touches of red from the Rocky Mountain maple. One beautiful stroll right from downtown Sandpoint is the colorful 1.7-mile Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail, pictured here. You’ll often spot waterfowl and even eagles along the trail.

There are activities galore, including early on, swimming, paddling and cruising on Lake Pend Oreille. Through October, hiking in the high country is superb, while mountain bikers will have the fine trail systems at Schweitzer and Pine Street Woods all to themselves. Both golf and disc golf are prime. And around town, there’s live music, fine dining and rich cultural events throughout the season.

Ahh, autumn. It’s a wonderful time to be in beautiful Sandpoint.
