Outdoor Enthusiast

From hiking, mountain biking and skiing to horseback riding and boating, Sandpoint has it all! The outdoor activities are endless all year around and there’s something for everyone to enjoy – whether you’re into extreme sports like mountain biking and snowboarding, or you prefer a more laid back experience like hiking and kayaking on the lake.

Hiking

Take a hike on one of Sandpoint’s numerous trails. The Gold Hill Trail is one of the most popular for local hikers and mountain bikers, a 3.7-mile track that can be moderate or strenuous. More hikes around the area include the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail, a relaxed, fairly flat lakeside trail that’s 3 miles out and back and accessed just north of Sandpoint City Beach; and don’t miss the Mickinnick Trail if you’re looking for a steep challenge and rewarding views. There are hundreds of hiking trails in and around Sandpoint to discover.

Biking

Mountain bikers can find their fill of great adventures in Sandpoint. Sherwood Forest is just west of town, featuring an extensive trail system on 143 acres of donated conservation easement land. Plus, up at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, trails including the new cross country and downhill tail system from the fire station or take the lift to the top of the mountain for some great views and mountain-high thrills!

Road bike loops that have gained traction include Baldy Mountain Road (just over 3 miles round-trip) and the 30-plus miles of easy, scenic riding through the Selle Valley via Colburn-Culver.

On The Lake

Head out on Lake Pend Oreille for an afternoon of paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding—you name it, everything’s within reach via rental shops along the Sand Creek Boardwalk or local marinas. If hanging out on the beach is more your speed, head on down to the City Beach located at the end of 102 Bridge St. for some lounging, swimming, sand volleyball, tennis and more. With great lodging, local restaurants, scenic chairlift rides, hiking, mountain biking, and family activities in the village, there’s endless activities to do. Three summertime festivals round out the resort’s bustling summertime scene. During the Winter months, everyone enjoys cross country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing and tons of family friendly events.

Horseback Riding
