Scenic Half features trio of races

With a route through historic downtown Sandpoint, then across the iconic Long Bridge with views of Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding mountains, there's no question how the Scenic Half got its name. This well-known race, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 20, attracts hundreds of participants every year, offering a 13.1 mile Half Marathon, a 10K and a 5K. Each category will acknowledge winners, and Half Marathon competitors who complete the race receive a finisher's medal. The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce donates a portion of each registration to Community Cancer Services, a nonprofit that supports women's health issues, so it's a win-win all around!
    Register at ScenicHalf.com.

Bid adieu to summer at Fall Fest

Beer enthusiasts, anxious skiers, music fans ... what better way to wrap up summer than during Schweitzer Mountain Resort's 23rd Annual Fall Fest this Labor Day weekend. The legendary three-day event features more than 60 regional microbrews with free live music all weekend long!
Fall Fest starts Saturday, Sept. 5, and concludes Monday, Sept 7. Beer tastings run from 11 a.m. 'til 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. 'til 4 p.m. Monday. There will be wine tastings and a soda tent in addition to the beer tent, so everyone can find a beverage that suits their tastes.
Schweitzer's village activities, including the zip line, climbing wall, sluice box, and scenic chairlift rides, will be in operation during the weekend.
This year's band line-up includes local favorites such as Devon Wade and The Miah Kohal Band, plus Spare Parts, Cathedral Pearls, Dimestore Prophets, Rust on the Rails, Strictly Business and a big finale with Hell's Belles (this female AC/DC tribute band wowed the crowd last year, and Schweitzer is thrilled to have them return). Don't miss it!

Yah! Draft Horse Show reining up

View the gentle giants and their skilled handlers during the Idaho Draft Horse and Mule International Show, arriving Sept. 24-27 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. Performances by these stunning horses include team competitions, wagon pulls and much more. You'll be amazed! The draft horses are an awe-inspiring sight for the entire family; with grand entry performances happening throughout the weekend, it's easy to catch one of the shows.
Tickets are $10 at the gate; no charge for children 6 and under. And on Friday only, two seniors can get in for the price of one ($5 per person). IdahoDraftHorseShow.com.

Panida's refreshed and ready!

Patrons of the Panida are anxious to return to the Panida Theater for a new season of performances after a refurbishing project kept it closed for most of the summer. Get a Sneak Peek this Thursday, Sept. 3 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., when the theater will show off the new ceiling and other finished projects. Sandpoint's theater is looking grander than ever!

And things are getting back to normal as the calendar starts to fill up with events at the historic building this fall, including the Manhattan Short Film Festival, coming up Oct. 1, 3-4. It's a new era at the Panida!

The smoke has cleared

The fires around the Northwest created a lot of smoky skies the past month, but as this e-newsletter goes out we've had a wonderful three-quarter-inch rainfall with more predicted this week. The air is clear again and our late summer and fall is one of the finest times to visit!
