Sandpoint in the fall: Quiet and lovely

Autumn is a season of transition, and a beautiful time of year to get outdoors and enjoy this idyllic and simple time of year. Fall colors will be coming on strong these next few weeks, making it a great reason to take a drive on numerous back roads - Bonner County has lakeside drives that offer scenic views of the lake, mountains and more. Stop by the Sandpoint Chamber offices at 1202 Fifth Ave. for a few favored local routes. There's also the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway, which begins in Sandpoint and traverses Highway 200 to the Montana state line.
Walkers and bicyclists won't find a more convenient or prettier trail - located right in town - than the Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail (as seen in photo, above). An easy, fairly flat trail, it hugs the shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille and offers visitors magnificent views across the lake and the Cabinet Mountains. The trailhead is located just beyond the Seasons Condos near Sandpoint City Beach.

Festive events offer family fun

Along with our gorgeous autumn colors and pumpkin-spiced everything comes traditional fall events that make the season so special. Sandpoint's Business Improvement District gets into the fun by hosting an Oktoberfest celebration Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Granary District, 513 Oak St. There will be local beer, wine and food vendors, along with arts and crafts - plus kids activities!
And make harvest memories with an outing that the entire family will enjoy at the U-Pick Pumpkin Patch at Hickey Farms. It's Sandpoint's only U-Pick patch, located at 674 Hickey Rd. - just five miles from Sandpoint heading east on Highway 200 - and it's open weekends in October. Hours are 3 p.m. 'til dusk starting this Friday, Oct. 2, and 10 a.m. 'til dusk Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4. Make old-fashioned harvest memories! Visit the Facebook page for more info.
Finally, coming up Oct. 10 is the end-of-the-season Harvest Fest. Sandpoint Farmers Market closes out the season with entertainment, food booths, activities, and displays at Farmin Park.

'Where nightmares are made'

Egads! Silverwood Theme Park transforms into Scarywood Haunted Nights, opening Friday, Oct. 2 and continuing throughout the month.
Scarywood was recently featured on The Travel Channel and voted as one of the top haunts in the U.S. Now that Scarywood is such a howling success (attendance continues to climb) the park again invested in new haunts for this year's frightful season!
In addition to some of Silverwood's most popular summer rides, including the Timber Terror roller coaster running BACKWARDS, Scarywood boasts five signature bone-chilling attractions with the new Caved In maze and newly intensified scenes in the Blood Bayou and 3Demntia, as well as more scare zones scattered throughout the park with unforeseen haunts, creatures and ghouls concealed in fog. They're strategically placed to keep guests on the edge of panic and fright. Don't say you haven't been warned!
