Livin' it up at the lake

It's July, it's warm, and we have a great big lake to enjoy! Many of Sandpoint's events are centered around Lake Pend Oreille, so take a look at a few that you'll want to check out:
- Fourth of July fireworks. The Sandpoint Lions Club shoots off fireworks at dusk Saturday, July 4, over the lake. It's a patriotic sight to behold!
- Great Sandpoint Flatwater Regatta. Sandpoint Rotary hosts races featuring canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in Sand Creek, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Bridge Street bridge.
- Antique and Classic Boat Show. This 13th annual event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Sandpoint Marina and Boardwalk in downtown Sandpoint, and includes the annual Parade of Boats on Sand Creek. View more than 50 classic and antique boats, plus there are family events for the kids. Sponsored by the Inland Empire Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.
- Full Moon and Hor d'Oeuvres Cruise. What's more lovely than taking in the Full Moon over the lake? Leave the navigating to Lake Pend Oreille Cruises during this special cruise Friday, July 31, where they'll guide the Shawnodese through eagle territory and then watch the full moon rise over the Cabinet Mountains. It's an unforgettable night!

Ah, take in fine summer experiences ...

Music, wine, beer, art - it all goes along with Sandpoint's extraordinary summers. Cool off during the 2nd Annual Sandpoint Beerfest, held from noon to 4 p.m Saturday, July 11, on the lawn outside Trinity at City Beach. Enjoy live music featuring Doug Bond and Marty Perron, plus there will be local and regional craft beers and ciders on tap. Come out and enjoy! Sponsored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.
Complementing this year's Mountain Music Festival is an all-new Northwest Winefest - all wrapped up into one enjoyable event happening Saturday, July 18, at Schweitzer Mountain Resort in the Selkirk Mountains. Three great bands are lined up for outdoor music, and 20 Northwest wineries will be in attendance serving up delicious wines. Rev up for the party with the Schweitzer Mountain Trail Run in the morning, featuring both 3.5 and 10 mile runs.
And it's a lovely party for all during the Festival at Sandpoint's Art Unveiling Thursday, July 16, at Dish at Dover Bay. It's a great afternoon of laughter, art and music - all in celebration of Sandpoint's incredible summer concert series coming up in August! Get a sneak peek at this year's original artwork by the talented Lucy West, plus nibble on complimentary appetizers prepared by Dish at Dover Bay, listen to live music by Bridges Home, and sip on cold beer as everyone admires the newest addition to the Festival's poster collection. The event starts at 5 p.m., and the poster is unveiled at 6 p.m. Signed, personalized posters will be for sale for $10. Free and open to the public.

An adventure to Harrison Lake

If you're looking for a great northern Idaho trail outing, one of the most popular adventures is hiking the trail to Harrison Lake. While it's no walk in the park, the 2.3-mile (each way) trail runs along an old logging road for about half of the distance before climbing up through subalpine fir and spruce into the rocks. The reward at the end is the very beautiful Harrison Lake. To access the trailhead, drive 20.5 miles up Pack River Road. To learn more about this hike and others in the area, check out the hiking guidebook Trails of the Wild Selkirks (available for purchase online or at many retail outlets in the Sandpoint area. And feel free to stop by the Sandpoint Chamber, 1202 Fifth Ave., for more information.
Of note: Huckleberry season is already here, early this year due to the warmer-than-usual trend that Sandpoint has been experiencing. And if it continues, the season will probably end earlier, too.

August is heating up with events!

For Sandpoint, there's nothing bigger than the amazing Festival at Sandpoint coming up Aug. 6-16. It's our famous concerts on the lawn that stand out from the rest, as fans are able to bring their own chairs, their own food and coolers, and kick back on the lawn under the stars!
Tickets are selling briskly for several concerts, including country music superstar Vince Gill. If you're a bluegrass fan, chances are you'll want to attend several of the shows, including the Lake Street Dive. See the entire lineup at FestivalatSandpoint.com.
Something that's come about over the past couple years is the Aftival - a concert series at downtown Sandpoint's The Hive to complement the Festival at Sandpoint. The late-night concerts (they start around 10 p.m.) feature a great array of talented musicians - this year's performers include funky METERS Aug. 7, Yonder Mountain String Band Aug. 8, and Melvin Seals and JGB both Aug. 14 and 15.
